CRI-SIL Silicones January 2010 Newsletter

Dear Clients,

Happy New Year! It's hard to believe we're already approaching February. This month we have some news regarding product availability.

Certain Momentive Performance Materials will no longer be available from CRI-SIL Silicones as of May 1, 2010. Some materials, like SE6160 have already been discontinued. Momentive is rationalizing several of its silicone grades and removing them from their portfolio. A complete list of the discontinued Momentive  products are shown in the table below.

In light of this development, CRI-SIL has begun developing offsets to some of these grades.  A completed technical data sheet (TDS) will be available no later than January 31, 2010 for offsets to SE6035, SE6075, SE6160, SE6140, and SE6180.  If you are interested in any of these offsets, please contact us for a copy of the TDS, MSDS, or a sample.**

If you currently purchase any of the other discontinued grades from Momentive Performance Materials and would like to request an offset from CRI-SIL, please call, email, or click the "Request a Quote" button below.

As always, CRI-SIL is here to assist you with any of your silicone material needs. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Customer Satisfaction! - It is once again that time of year where we solicit information from our most valuable resource - Our customers!  Some of you may have already received a copy of the satisfaction survey from our Customer Service Representative, Sue Johnson.  If you have not received the survey and you would like to participate in the 10 question survey, please email her at sjohnson@crisil-silicones.com.  Not only will you be helping us improve our product and service, you'll automatically be registered to win a brand new Nintendo Wii.

All survey's must be completed and submitted by March 1, 2010. The results will be published in the March 2010 newsletter after the data has been compiled and the lucky recipient has been presented the Wii. Your valuable input has helped us improve many of our processes in the past and we look forward to creating positive change based on your input in the future. Thank you.

HOW CAN CRI-SIL HELP MAKE YOUR BUSINESS MORE PROFITABLE?

CRI-SIL is always looking for new ways to help our customers save time and money.  This month we are pleased to offer some discounted shipping rates in the New England area. By working with Colonial Trucking Company we have managed to come up with some nicely discounted pallet rates.

Colonial Trucking has been in business for over 50 years.  They specialize in FTL, LTL, and consolidation and distribution of goods. Their main terminal is in Brockton, MA, and their satellite terminal is in Auburn, ME. They service almost all of New England with the exception of Vermont.

Below please find the pallet rate program for New England that Colonial has extended to CRI-SIL and its vendors.  It is based off of a standard 4x4 skid with a max weight of 2200 pounds.  An additional fuel surcharge is added which they update every Monday afternoon.

1-4 Skids $39 Each
5-8 Skids $35 Each
9-12 Skids $33 Each
More than 12 Skids Call for rate

Possible interline points for Colonial are Points west of Westfield, MA, all points in Vermont, North of Laconia, NH and north of Bangor, ME.

If you would like to take advantage of these rates, please let your CRI-SIL customer service representative know. Additionally, Colonial has a program for Northern NJ and metropolitan NY as well. If you have any interest in these areas please let us know.

TECHNICAL TIP

DID YOU KNOW?
  - Linear Shrink Rates for Silicone

When a molding manufacture produces a new mold for a new material, an important variable to consider is the shrink rate of the silicone. Generally speaking silicone shrink rates do not  vary greatly, although depending upon the application, a small change in shrink rate can greatly affect the outcome of the final part.

Typically, the shrink rate for silicone compounds without extending filler range from 3.25% to 3.5%. A typical silicone compound without extending filler has a specific gravity in the range of 1.10 to 1.20.

Conversely, a silicone compound with extending filler will typically have a lower shrink rate than one without extending filler.  As specific gravities exceed 1.20 there is a good chance the material has some sort of extending filler and the shrink rates will generally start to decrease. The following is an example of shrink rate for two similar Shore A materials with different specific gravities.

Hardness  55 Shore A Durometer  55 Shore A Durometer
Specific Gravity  1.15  1.50
Linear Shrink Rate  3.5% 2.8%
